Online Gambling Psychology

April 23rd, 2008

Some people believe that gambling is a pure luck. While it’s not so luck is the biggest factor when it comes to winning big. Even the most professional players sometimes lose due to lack of luck.
But luck is not everything when it’s about gambling. There’s also a psychology at work. Here we’ll try to give consideration to the psychology of online gambling.
There are two different views on what gambling means psychologically to a human. They are completely different. Some see gambling as a bad, irrational behaviour. They deem gambling an illegal activity. These people are persons with straight laced conventional worldviews that don’t incorporate the elements of risk. These people prefer to out their money in the bank rather than make a risky investement such as stock market investments (which is the same thing as gambling). These people consider gambling as a pathological sickness that cannot be controlled by a person who is deep into gambling; they may even pity the gambler and label them as diseased.
At the same time there is another group of people who view gambling as something absolutely natural, they tend to view gambling as rational and instinctional process. For these people gambling is a healthy form of leisure, entertainment. hat’s not to say this gambler wants to lose or can’t become addicted, just that they view gambling as a natural way to live one’s life.
There’s no wrong or right answer, neither should be judged; it really boils down to a basic fundamental way a person chooses to live their life.
Emotions:
Leave your emotions somewhere else while gambling. If you’ll lose control of emotions you’ll get into mind state which is pretty far from intelligent player’s mind state. A successful gambler knows when to play and when to walk away. A smart gambler will never go for broke (let’s consider that this gambler is not just smart but well experienced).
It goes without saying that emotions control is an easy state to achieve. There are too many ups and downs, too many close calls not to get emotional. It’s natural to get emotional but don’t let the emotions stick to you; don’t carry them into the next hand; find a way to release the stress and anxiety and hatred and anger and stay in the moment. Get angry in retrospect when you’re not at the table.

Drinking & gambling

February 4th, 2008

It depends on the person whether to drink while gamble or not to. Professional  players separate the two actions from each other on purpose. If it’s a single  glass of wine or a beer then everything is ok. But if it’s a steady stream of highballs could have a drastic effect coupled with a loosing streak. The problem is the liquor helps to remove fear and makes some people feel invincible. This could work to the player’s advantage if the dice table is hot or the cards are running over the player. This feeling of power which drinks give some people is dangerous when the play is not running hot. Mistakes in the amount bet or running parlays to the max can play havoc with a player’s gambling stake. A clear and sober mind is an asset for most gamblers trying to read the nuances of the trend. A person who is drinking to excess can see a trend where none exist.
There are all kinds of stories about how a gambler won a great deal of money while drunker than a sailor on liberty. They may be true, but think about what happens in any major casino. The house gives away drinks to patrons who are gambling. Why do you think they are being so kind to the players? Casinos know that drinking takes away inhibitions and the lack of control may make some players bet more than they would if not drinking. This free drink policy can backfire if the player gets hot, but over time the free drinks work in favor of the house.
The decision that a player needs to make is an individual one and should be based on the player’s own experience. Some poker players can drink like fish and their cards never get drunk. Others have a few drinks and their hands are bet like they are all winners when obviously that is not the case. Drinking players have a tendency to try to bluff more often than they should. Drinking players also are willing to call bets when the only way they can win is to make a miracle draw.
Watch the play in poker of any player who is putting them down at a steady pace.
If their play gets wilder as they drink, they are either going to kill the table of players or have a very bad night from their own
